Broadway Shows in New York grossed a record ticket sales $1.45 billion

Broadway shows in New York grossed a record $1.45 billion for the year that ended May 21, even as total attendance dipped with the Hamilton musical mania.

The number of theater visitors, at 13.27 million was the second-best ever after the prior year’s record, according to statistics released Tuesday by the Broadway League, a trade association of theater owners, producers and others in the business. They created 45 new shows, 20 of them musicals, which contributed to a more than 5 percent rise in revenue.

“It’s been a season filled with creativity, innovation and magical moments,” Charlotte St. Martin, president of the league, said in a statement. “We’ve seen exciting debuts and thrilling comebacks.”

Among the new productions were a musical based on the film “Groundhog Day,” which opened April 17, and a revival of “Sunset Boulevard,” which returned to Broadway in February. Flops included shows based on the books “American Psycho” and “Tuck Everlasting,” which both closed last year.

“Hamilton,” which debuted in 2015, remains a top draw even though most of the original cast, including creator Lin-Manuel Miranda, has been replaced. Last year, the price of premium seats for the musical based on the life of the first U.S. treasury secretary rose to $849 from $475. Seats can sell for more on the secondary market.
